17 SPEEDHEAD

Cotton Candy
by Chris Goldsmith

Three things I look for when checking out a new cd…
1 – Music with an edge, but with feeling
2 – The “groove to move”… a good band that makes you wanna get down on the floor
3 – VARIETY!
The boys have managed to pack these in their new cd and added a flavour that will keep you coming back for more!! You can totally get a great taste of their talent during their live acts. The band chooses a sweet mix of good ol’ rock’n’roll music, some alternative grundge with an attitude, party tunes that will bump you off your barstool and touching ballads. As for the album, they combined all this and slammed down ten awesome cuts for our listening pleasure. Variety is the key to a great cd. “Cotton Candy” starts with catchy progressing energy and includes a couple of emotional tracks that shows the band’s “sensitive” side. Here are my personal favorites:

1 – SHE’S A MONSTER
Hey guys… you all must have a horror story about an old girlfriend (or maybe current) that had you trained to fetch and roll over. I’ve certainly been there. This is a song most guys can relate to. Very upbeat and catchy, you’ll be singing “Witch with a capital B” for weeks!

2 – BEST ALONE
This was the first song I had the honour to check out before the CD was released. (Thanks MO!) After hearing this aggressive track I realized how much the band has progressed since my last impressed review. This song totally reminds me of a friend of mine who enjoys being a hermit… following his “She’s a Monster” experience. Great strong track, PLAY IT LOUD!!

3 – I AM SASKATCHEWAN
Here’s the new anthem for the province these small town boys hail. What a fun track! 17 Speedhead shouts out props to their home where others would not. Saskatchewan is such an underrated place, just meet some of the residents. The boys are proud, shout it loud!

Honorable mention goes to Splintered Nights. I’m not normally a big fan of ballads, but this one seemed to stop me in my tracks and almost brought a tear to my eye. Singer Gerald Brisson truly has an amazing voice, here’s a prime example. Sit back, relax, and listen.

The cd is awesome! Take my word for it. Help support this young Canadian talent and have fun bouncing to their kickass tracks. This Meadow Lake SK band may be hitting your town soon. Come and join them on the dance floor!
